I was talking to a young adult about how she was doing and how her job was going. She said she loved the work she was doing and the people she worked with were great. But I could tell there was something wrong. She did not have that twinkle in her eye or that excitement in her voice as she talked about her situation.
When I inquired more about the job, I found out that she was feeling stuck. She thought her career was not going where she wanted it to go.
So, I asked, “What are you are doing now to develop your future and get unstuck?”
She looked at me puzzled, so I went on to explain…
Instead of looking at the macro picture and thinking her career is not where she wants it to be, she should be looking at the micro view. She should focus on the little things she is learning. Try seeing what small things she can do now to get her where she wants to be in the future.
If you talk to an athlete, yes, they want to run the next marathon, but they know they need to start the training now. If they put in the miles now, they will reach their goal in the future.
It’s the same in business and in your career. Hoping and thinking about the future is great, but the only way you are going to get where you want to go is to work on the small stuff today.
If you feel like you’re stuck, stop thinking about how something or someone is holding you back. Focus on the one or two minor things you can do to get some momentum going. You will be amazed at how the small things can take you big places.
Until next time…I’m Marty, make every minute count.
